Ecologically Informed Land Stewardship
Invasive species removal
Invasive plants can greatly reduce ecosystem diversity, create dangerous fire fuels, and harm native plant populations. Many invasive plants are eager to take over disturbed soils, we therefore use minimally intrusive techniques to remove them while promoting existing native plants in the area. This involves having a deep understanding of each species lifecycle and timing treatments to maximize effectiveness. Many invasive species, such as broom, can survive in the seed bank for a number of years and require successive treatments.
Forest thinning for ecosystem health
Many ecosystems in Sonoma County are too dense with trees. This is a product of fire suppression and the forced cessation of Indigenous land stewardship practices, such as cultural burning. Encroachment by conifers and other hardwood species greatly impacts tree growth and vitality, especially in shade intolerant species such as oak. Excess trees on the landscape increases fire danger and also places additional stress on the water table. Our thinning work is done in an ecologically mindful way meaning we will decrease the fire danger on your property while increasing forest health and leaving plenty of habitat for wildlife and plants.
Native plant restoration: native seed collection and amplification
We collect native seeds on-site and redistribute them in priority and disturbed areas. We also restore damaged ecosystems using ecologically minded thinning, strategic plantings, flood and erosion mitigation techniques, and other techniques
Monthly maintenance
Land stewardship involves maintaining an ongoing relationship with the land. Though we design our work to last and be minimally invasive, all projects involve active engagement with the land to keep it healthy. This is especially true for invasive species removal, thinning in forest ecosystems, and yearly fire safety measures such as gutter cleaning and duff removal. We will tailor a management plan based on the specific needs of your property and personal preferences and ensure it is implemented to perfection, every step of the way.
