Biochar
After fuel reduction and forest stewardship there may be a build up of woody debris on your property. Best management practice for sustainability is to leave as much material onsite while reducing fire risk, sequestering carbon, and increasing ecosystem health. We have found that the best way to achieve these goals is the creation of biochar. By using our kiln and water trailer we are able to turn hazardous fuels into biochar which increases the soil’s ability to retain water, supports soil microbiology, improves soil health and sequesters carbon.
Decomposition leads to the release of carbon into the atmosphere, the process is much slower than burning but the end result is the same. Carbon in the form of biochar can stay sequestered in the soil for thousands of years if not more!
Biochar is extremely porous creating an abundance of surface area which supports water retention in the soil and creates habitat for beneficial soil microbes. Consider this option to boost the health of your soil, increase water retention on your land and help keep carbon in the ground!
